With the core principle that music is the medicine, Harare-born artist and producer Dr. Chaii releases his new single Bongo on Apple Music today. This just show’s that his catalogue continues to traipse into surprising territory.
Sean Paul-x-Dua Lipa’s “No Lie” was the first big song he penned and produced after his move Stateside. A love for dancehall picked up from Harare’s fascination with all things dutty and waist-winding notwithstanding, that moment all of Dr Chaii’s childhood dreams, and rendered everything a possibility.
Production work on Latin music superheroes J. Balvin-x-Pitbull-x-Camilla Cabello’s “Hey Ma” followed. Dr. Chaii received a Grammy® Award nomination for his contribution to the stinging, summery aura of the reggaeton-inflected song, which features during the opening scene of the box office smash Fast & Furious 8 – The Fate of The Furious.
Dr. Chaii’s production and songwriting credits include Trey Songz’s “1×1”; Chris Brown’s “Questions” (UK Top 10); Pitbull-x-Fifth Harmony’s “Por Favor”; and Jason Derulo’s “Tip Toe” (UK Top 5).
Dr Chaii was chosen to be part of the Apple Music and Platoon Cape Town Creative Lab in June 2018.The objective of the Lab was to provide unsigned artists form Africa with an opportunity to hone their skills, taking their musical vision to the next level, while giving them access to a global audience and an insight to what the music industry entails.
