Johannesburg, 13 November, 2018 — Two literary luminaries and Home Affairs minister’s resignation amongst the most searched Google queries this week.
News that 46-year old American actress, Gabrielle Union, and 36-year old basketball player, Dwayne Wayde, delivered a baby via a surrogate set social media and Google Search ablaze on Friday after Union made the announcement on Instagram. “Gabrielle Union” generated more than 10 000 Google search queries, coming in behind searches for “AUS vs SA” and “SA vs AUS” — search terms which garnered 40 000 queries respectively in the wake of the cricket meet between South Africa and Australia.
South Africans watched as a fast-moving bushfire forced more than 250 000 California residents to evacuate their homes, obliterating everything in its path. “California fires” generated more than 5 000 Google search queries on Saturday, while “Mamelodi Sundowns vs Orlando Pirates” generated more than 50 000.
On the 85th birthday of the late South African author and first local black woman to ever publish a book, “Miriam Tlali” generated more than 200 000 search queries, following a commemorative Doodle on the search engine’s homepage on Sunday.
More than 200 000 search queries were generated for “Stan Lee” as news broke of the Marvel Comics creator’s death. Stan Lee has long been celebrated as a genius comic superhero creator with strips such as Black Panther, Spiderman, The Incredible Hulk and Ironman. Lee died at age 96.
Home Affairs Minister, Malusi Gigaba, once again went viral with the search term “Malusi Gigaba” generating more than 50 000 Google queries following the unexpected announcement of his resignation from cabinet on Tuesday. South Africans also generated more than 20 000 search queries for “Black Friday 2018 deals”, ahead of the online shopping event taking place on 23 November.
As news of the imminent launch of the new bank was announced, South Africans generated more than 20 000 Google search queries for “Discovery Bank” on Wednesday, while Black Friday trended again on Thursday with “Makro Black Friday” generating more than 5 000 Google Search queries.
