Dreams do come true – just ask 23-year-old cameraman Winston Churchill Moeketsi who got his big break behind the scenes on Coke Studio, the 16 week music reality show broadcasting on e.tv.
On his interest in the film and television industry Winston, who is from Lenasia, says, “I grew up watching and loving movies and could remember exactly what was said in each. I thought that maybe this was something I could do for a living.”
He has recently graduated from The University of Witwatersrand with Honours in Dramatic Arts in Film and Television. Winston was part of the Good Noise Productions Intern Programme when his talent and enthusiasm was spotted by the Coke Studio Executive Producers. They then recommended him to the show’s director and the rest, as they say, is history. Winston believes it was because he is a hard worker and team player that he was selected, and shares that being chosen was both amazing and a privilege.
“My first day in studio was very scary but within a few hours I felt at home. The backstage crew helped me so much and some even related to my situation,” says Winston. He learnt a lot very quickly and before long was integral to the production.
The young cameraman was blown away by the behind-the-scenes work that goes into creating music, especially with the Coke Studio artists only having three days in which to come up with a song. He loved meeting the local musicians involved in the programme and says that his Coke Studio experience introduced him to Mzansi music.
He was super proud to see his work shown on TV and had calls from excited family and friends congratulating him on a job well done.
Now working as a freelancer, Winston urges other young people starting out in the film and TV industry to always be friendly and professional on set, “People will remember you and want to work with you in future.” As his namesake once said, “Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.”
Tune into e.tv every Monday night at 8:30pm to see Winston’s work on Coke Studio.
