“You Can Do It” was the all-time Kenyan chart buster. The Hodi Boys (featuring Juma Toto) had taken a very firm grip of the Nairobi dance scene from their base of Hallians Club, on Tom Mboya Street. Their early 70’s hit “Gor Mahia F.C.”, was called for over and over again! Then disaster; Juma Toto, author/composer of “Gor Mahia F.C.” left in a fit of pique! Would this be the end of the Hodi Boys? Not at all! Slim Ali was their saviour. He had a number of new songs up his sleeve that were more “Western” than anything else on the entire African song market. Their first release would be “You Can Do It”! This was the first Kenyan “African” song that would appeal across the board.
Young, Black, Brown, White, youngsters just could not ignore Slim Ali’s call to the dance floor. – and it didn’t stop there. “You Can Do It” was to top the Hit Parades of Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Gambia and Senegal. Released in France by Warner Bros, it was exported to most countries in Africa, South America, and The West Indies.
The other songs in this selection are taken from when Slim Ali & The Hodi Boys were AT THEIR VERY BEST! You will just love this album.
