Emmarentia Dam was transformed into an incredible one-day music and family festival as excited Joburgers of all ages came out in their thousands yesterday (Tuesday 9 August) to picnic, dance and enjoy the winter sunshine at the debut of Emmarentia Live.

Under a cloudless blue sky, with temperatures peaking at 25-degrees, the lawns of Emmarentia Dam quickly filled up with picnic blankets, chairs, umbrellas and bean bags as fans claimed their spots for eight hours of non-stop music and festival fun.

They came to see the all-local line-up of Bad Peter, Gangs of Ballet, Freshlyground, Mango Groove, Mi Casa and Goodluck. And these iconic musicians did not disappoint!

Hit after hit, the line-up had the crowds standing, jumping and signing along to favourites like Gangs of Ballet’s Always, Freshlyground’s Doo Be Doo, Mi Casa’s Jika, and Goodluck’s All The Colours. Proving they’re still as popular – if not more- than when they started, Mango Groove performed their new song Shone On to roars from the crowd.

A touching moment was when Mi Casa trumpeter Mo-T joined Mango Groove on stage to play a song in honour of Mo-T’s late father, Banza Kgasoane, one of the founding members of Mango Groove.

A special Women’s Day tribute saw Freshlyground’s Zolani Mahola and Mango Groove’s Claire Johnston sing a song together – a moving moment where these two powerful voices combined – as they encouraged South African women to celebrate who they are.

While older fans enjoyed the music, kids had a blast at the dedicated kids’ zone complete with jumping castles and an etv trailer showing children’s programmes. Nineteen gourmet food trucks made sure no one went hungry and the beer and wine garden were busy as fans took advantage of the benches and umbrellas.

Make sure you book Emmarentia Live in your calendars for next year – it’s only going to get bigger and better!
