Following the success of the southernmost House of Vans event in Cape Town this March, Johannesburg was selected to host a bumper weekend of music, art, street culture and skateboarding (25th – 27th August). The event was part of Vans anniversary celebrating 50 Years “Off The Wall“.
94 Juta Street in Braamfontein underwent a dramatic transformation into House of Vans Johannesburg for the three day celebration. The 2000 strong venue welcomed an amalgamation of some of the biggest names in Hip-Hop, Rock and Punk. Opening night’s live act Maphorisa put on a spectacular performance, ushering in KiD X who brought the crowd to a near frenzy. Ms. Cosmo, Kid Fonque, Themba Lunacy and Mvelo all delivered blistering sets throughout the night.
Day two saw the opening of an art exhibition featuring works curated by three specially selected artists: contemporary artist Black Koki, embroidery artist Danielle Clough, and photographer Tyrone Ping. Vans heritage pieces were on display, and guests had the opportunity to engage in some creative expression with tote bag printing and mug customization workshops. The crowd bounced to music performances by The Tazers, Sol Gems, Al Bairre, Bye Beneco, leading up to an explosive performance by The Make-Overs.
Day three returned to Vans core culture with a skateboarding event in partnership with Baseline Skate Shop. The Pro Classic skate event introduced a newly built skate obstacle which pays homage to a classic Johannesburg skate spot that is a tip-of-the-hat adaptation to the infamous Angle Banks on Loveday Street, one of Johannesburg’s most unique and iconic natural street spots. SA’s top skaters thrashed it out with R10 000 cash for tricks supported by Red Bull.
The final night’s DJ line up kicked off with sizzling sets from TMO, Slice Frederico, Olwee and Speedsta. The Johannesburg crowd exploded when Youngsta walked on stage to deliver his first ever live performance in the City of Gold. Only to be joined by long-time collaborator Stilo Magolide with a version of Pose like Stilo that set the night alight.
Beyond an awesome line up of local music talent, a whole program of workshops were on offer. Those who were feeling creative had plenty to get stuck into and walked away with a keepsake – a free customised tote bag, coffee mug or a gift from Vans.
