Just Chillin Events in association with the City of Tshwane and Clarins are proud to bring you The September Issue: A series of fashion events to celebrate heritage, uplift the community and engage with the youth as we know best. The September issue will host two events – Design for Change and The Just Chillin Presents the September Issue Fashion Show.
In this chaotic landscape of fashion fiends, there is an obvious need for identity and innovation, to shift the focus to where it should be – on quality and individuality. And where better to find uniqueness and innovation than in the fresh and free voices of young emerging designers.
The September Issue is a month long small business development programme that celebrates and supports young fashion designers through the hosting of workshops and an extravagant fashion show. The September issue also aims to empower, connect and prepare young designers to showcase their talents at the fashion show.
Just Chilin believes in creating opportunities. Fashion elicits ideas of the creative individuals involved in the design process. The fact that someone came up with an idea of a garment to wear however crazy it may look, is a brilliant one; and it should be encouraged and applauded!
Design for Change is an initiative aimed at encouraging young and emerging designers to tap into their creativity and seek quality through individuality with various activities aimed at unleashing South Africa’s young talent potential.
The Design for Change initiative which took place on the Saturday, the 17 September with phases of various activities ending it off with a fashion show that will showcase local and aspiring design talents.

Workshop:
This involved participating designers who went through a preliminary round of showcasing for a chance to have their creations shown at the final fashion show. Each participating designer met individually with the Judges to show their collection. Judges evaluated the collection on a variety points but the main points for assessment were based on the following: talent, design aesthetic, how strong their convictions are about their collections, cut and fit and their use of fabric
Design Talk:
The Design talks were industry discussions in TED Talk style format set up around the idea of challenging our participating designers to be more environmentally friendly.
The talks were led by Anisa Mpungwe, Founder of LoinCloth. She is the first black female to win the coveted Elle New Talent Competition and two years later was the first Tanzanian female to be invited to showcase at the Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week as part of the Arise Magazine Collective show. Alongside Anisa was owner and designer of Sylvester Falata who has showcased in Paris, Niger, Kenya and at all major South African Fashion weeks. Sylvester has worked with Lira, Thembi Seete and Jamali and is best known for his nonconventional approach to menswear. Sylvester gave advice and pointers on how designers can not only improve their collection before the fashion show but on how they can build a brand that positively impacts the fashion industry.
The Design Talks engaged on what it means to be ‘eco’ or ‘green’ today, as designs attempt to solve the problems of toxicity in our clothing, waste materials and resources, improving social issues facing garment factory workers and fibre producers, and addressing the negative environmental impacts that currently plague the fashion industry.
The Design Talks also factored in the impact of collaboration within the fashion industry where both designers, hairdressers and make-up artist are aware of the latest trends, and are able to adapt them to suit particular collections, setting new trends in the process.
Just Chillin Presents The September Issue Fashion Show will conclude the Design for Change activities with an artistic collaboration showcased by the winning designers, make-up artists and the latest hair trends on the 24th of September.
The Just Chillin Fashion Show carries out the objective of showcasing South Africa’s upcoming fashion talent through The City of Tshwane’s as a key platform, establishing and positioning Tshwane as a key player within the fashion metropolis.
The designers will have a runway show specially produced for them to bring out the best in their range. The show will host special guest Italian designer, Cristiana Mimmi, who will showcase her Kikomba Jewellery line. Kikomba is inspired by eco-fashion and tribal jewellery, supporting designers with a view to uplift the community and eco-friendly trades. Portion of the sales will be donated to Women Against Rape Initiative.
We are proud to announce that GalXBoy will have their debut catwalk event on the night. Other designers showcasing will be Amen Couture, Textiles of Africa, Serati LTD and various other local talents.
After the show we party. Headlining act for the after party include: DJ Kenzhero, PH, Guru, Her Majesty, Lil Bow and Johnny Cradle. Tickets will be available from Webtickets.
