Maftown Heights really got tested this year and even though it ended in a sad way, I think next year will be bigger.
Something I complained about last year was the access to the venue, which moved this year to the front because that’s where all the foot traffic was. I was let down by the availability of toilets though, there didn’t seem to be enough.
Whilst we were enjoying the music, it rained really hard. To a point where we moved to shelter and something I really appreciated was the organisers allowing Golden Circle ticket holders to take refuge in VVIP until the rain cleared.
I enjoyed the VIP and VVIP sections as there was free food available and we got vouchers for a couple of free drinks but golden circle is where you were most likely to find me.

As Maftown Heights offers more for the artists, it really proved who the biggest acts for 2016 were. People that were really received well were A-Reece, Emtee, Nasty C, Riky RIck Khuli Chana, AKA and OkMalumKoolKat. Besides the fans knowing all their songs, they also made sure to not only engage with crowds but keep them moving throughout. Kwesta and KO did have really big songs and Kwesta bringing out Mdu was a huge highlight but both artists slowed things down. Cassper Nyovest barely got to perform with HHP because the event was ended in a sad way, apparently there was a noise complaint and police shut it down and even though I have a lot of questions about that, I know that a lot of people were sad he didn’t get to perform. Khuli Chana had the best intro this year, I think he always has the best intros. A beautiful moment was watching the crowd rapping along to A-Reece whilst it rained. AKA’s performance signalled that there was something wrong because he rushed through his performance and when Khuli Chana came on, he performed 2 minutes of 5 songs, then it was apparent that was a big problem backstage.
Ambitouz Entertainment really makes sure to provide a full experience, no matter who is performing, they are proving to be a really powerful label, followed by Family Tree. Another positive I have to mention is the availability of SAPS on location and JMPD when we left.
Even though the event was cut, I woke up feeling like Maftown Heights gave us a part 2, just for Khuli Chana, AKA and Cassper Nyovest because the crowd didn’t get to enjoy their performances but we will see what the organisers have planned for us next year.
