The Movie Music Festival finally took place. Even thought it was the first event, I have to be fair on the organisers because they have extensive experience in event management. There were quite a few things I didn’t enjoy about the event, so best to start with those and the move on to the things I loved/ liked about it.
Let’s get started.
There only being 1 small bar for general access people was a let-down. Even more of a let-down when 4 hours into the event, the drinks weren’t cold. Then 6 hours into the event, 60% of the ciders and beers would run out, which meant eventually as the night went on, everyone drinking beers and ciders would have to default to Castle Lite. The biggest upsetting factor about the bar was that it was really too small to cater to everyone that was attending. There was a rule of cups costing R5 when we arrived but as the night went on, cups were free. We were also informed that we could purchase (or rent) buckets for R40 when we arrived but were informed that this wasn’t possible.
When it rained for about 90 minutes, it was clear to see that organisers weren’t prepared for this. I usually don’t have a problem with rain but it rained really hard and we all rain to seek shelter behind the bar.
I also picked up on 2 security risks during the event. The first was anyone could have easily bribed the security guards at the far end to sneak in. General admin people weren’t issued tags, so anyone could have entered and they would’ve been hard to find because we all had “invisible stamps”. The second risk was someone potentially running through the guards at the exit. It was wide open and if they didn’t sneak in, they could have run in. Highly unlikely but still possible.

I can’t say anything on not releasing the set times and also why the times were so scrambled because it did make things more interesting. Everyone that performed really did a good job (even with the absence of Babes Wodumo, whom people waited for). We even got to hear new music from a couple of artists.
I did appreciate the abundance of toilets as this is really rare at events. The DJs teaming up with dancers was really cool as it created a good look and feel of the whole thing. I really wish this stays. The screens on the stage were also a nice highlight, that with really bright lights, actually even though the stage was small, it was beautifully designed and showed that thought went into it. Not having a Golden Circle area was a big win for me. The space allocation was also really big but not following the “Golden Circle” notion made things more fun.

I do feel the event on an overall was more hyped up to what it should’ve been. There was so much missing or my expectations were really high after the media brief. Even though it was self-funded and there weren’t any brand activations, I was honestly hoping for 360 experience around the whole event.
