Unfollowed, one of the 10 most-watched local titles on Showmax last year, returns for a second season on Wednesday, 27 November 2024.
Now hosted by broadcaster Spitch Nzwawumbi, Unfollowed takes a deep dive into the personal and professional impact of cancel culture on South African celebrities. Each episode explores a different public figure, unpacking the controversies that have shaped their lives and careers.
The Showmax Original kicks off with reality star and businesswoman Mel Viljoen. Known for her rise to fame on The Real Housewives of Pretoria, Mel’s journey was marred by accusations and allegations related to her business, Tammy Taylor Nails.
This episode will unpack the controversy, analyse Mel’s responses, and explore how these challenges have shaped both her career and personal life.
Each episode will focus on a different celebrity. Radio presenter Ngizwe Mchunu; Brenda Fassie’s heir, musician Bongani Fassie; traditional healer and DJ, Gogo Skhothane; hip-hop artist Pitch Black Afro; media personality Bujy Bikwa; radio legend Linda Sibiya; and Pastor Mboro will all share their personal stories of having their reputations shattered and careers hanging in the balance.
In addition, each episode will feature insights from journalists, activists, and legal experts, offering a well-rounded perspective.
Unfollowed is produced by GOAT, who won the SAFTA for Life With Kelly Khumalo last year and just took home Best Reality Series at The National Film and TV Awards South Africa, as well as Best Female TV Personality for Lethabo LeJoy.
“Unfollowed Season 2 will offer viewers deeper, more nuanced conversations that challenge you to look beyond the surface and consider the complexities of cancel culture and the power of social media in shaping lives and careers,” says executive producer Graeme Swanepoel. “Unfollowed pulls no punches in its portrayal of cancel culture – it offers an unflinching, raw look at the reality of the phenomenon and its victims, with no sugar-coating or glossing over the harsh truths.”
