St. Stephens Choir came out of St Stephens Anglican Church, one of the first buildings to grace the Nairobi, Kenya skyline in 1902. In 1923 re-dedicated and relocated it stands on Jogoo Road as St Stephens Cathedral once the largest cathedral between Cape Town and Cairo.
St. Stephens Choir founded by the late Prof. George Senoga-Zake in 1956, came under the direction of the late Darius Mbela in 1966 (originally choirmaster of St. Phillips Church Jericho). By the early70s this Choir had become the dominant name in all the Anglican Church choirs. Top Choir Masters and Choristers were drawn to St. Stephens Choir. They became famous nationally and internationally (especially throughout Germany following their performances with the Hanover Youth Orchestra).
Their most famous recording in Kenya was ‘Tribute to Mzee Kenyatta’ as performed during the state funeral of Kenya’s first President in 1978.
St. Stephens Choir, to this date, is still the top rated choir in the country, and under Eric Wasonga and Daniel Mada, more wonderful Gospel songs are forecast for the future.
