1 of the most anticipated events in the digital marketing industry, The Digital Edge Live took place last week, which boasted a huge line-up and also brought down Spike Lee as the guest speaker.
I spoke to a couple of the attendees after the event to get different views of the conference from them. The general impression I got is most people were pleased with the conference as it was packed with case studies, campaigns and insights. I also got the feeling that they couldn’t understand Spike Lee’s connection to the conference. Some also questioned how we were not provided with WiFi but we were at a Digital Conference.
From my view, the venue was amazing, it did feel too big but 1 has to consider that people buy tickets on the event day and there was room allocated for them. The flow of the conference was beautifully narrated as they introduced each speaker and section of the conference. I admired the amount of rehearsal that went into it. I was disappointed in the catering though but I was told it got better later and I wish we had programmes so we knew what was going on.

With the speakers, I wish we were able to unpack more from them, we had some of the best storytellers in the industry and we couldn’t pull the insights we wanted from them. This also extended to Spike Lee’s talk, he played a very lengthy trailer from his new movie. The question and answer session was very short, so we didn’t get all that we wanted from him.
So on an overall, from my view, being so close to the industry, some of the case studies presented to us didn’t seem new to me. I also got the feeling that having a big line-up meant rushing the speakers and not allowing them to get comfortable. It was an experience I wouldn’t trade though, we were able to talk to some of the industry leaders before and after the event and learn from them. The spoken word poet at the end was a nice touch.

The Digital Edge Live is also young and each year is a learning opportunity, the bar has been set and next year promises to be even bigger.
