The Folklore Festival Announces Its Main Festival Artist Line Up For Johannesburg

Johannesburg, South Africa, 20 August 2024 – The third edition of the Folklore Festival Celebrates 30 years of Democracy and Heritage month with the annual festival on the 14th of September 2024, at the Constitution Hill Women’s Jail with a rich line-up of musicians, authors, spoken word artists, poets, and storytellers.

The Folklore community is committed to creating family-friendly events and dedicating moments for intergenerational dialogue. The organisation is steadfast in pursuing its mission to share, capture, preserve, and archive all that is African Folklore. The festival has a full program of edutainment lined up for kids of all ages – featuring Logan and Friends with education specialist Dr Jocelyn Logan-Friend, Dr Gcina Mhlophe and Sho Madjozi with Sho Ma & The stars. 

“It is time for this community to come together again to share in culture, creativity and heritage”, said Pilani Bubu, Folklore Festival Director. “This is a family-friendly platform to have those resonant conversations, to hold space for our shared values and to contribute to nation-building.”

The artist line-up includes a powerful voice in women empowerment and African identity Amanda Black, the legendary multi-faceted musical anthropologist Dr Madala Kunene, and the sensational singer-songwriter Maleh. The line-up also includes celebrated author and storyteller Dr Gcina Mhlophe, alongside the international singer, songwriter Sho Madjozi among other respected artivists and performers.

The host and MC, is the indelible storyteller, Pilani Bubu, a multi-award winning singer-songwriter, poet, TV presenter and also the founder and curator of the Folklore Festival. This year she performs Nay’Indaba, reflecting on South Africa’s history past to present in honour of the  30 years of Freedom with the festival’s #WeTheFolk theme.
