It’s been a massive week for European football fans, with the top eight teams doing battle in the quarter finals of the UEFA Champions League. Those teams also dominated South Africa’s weekly search trends, along with Khloe Kardashian and Manchester United.
United grabbed more than 100 000 searches on Saturday as they beat English Premier League leaders Manchester City in one of the league’s most competitive derbies. Coming from 2-0 down, the Red Devils won the match 3-2. The win also meant that City’s title celebrations were put on hold, leaving them with a 13 point lead with six games remaining.
Local football also trended on Saturday, with Kaizer Chiefs’ implosion against Chippa United generating more than 50 000 searches.
On Tuesday meanwhile, Barcelona and Liverpool both saw more than 100 000 searches as they took Roma and Manchester City in their respective UEFA Champions League quarter finals. Ultimately, Barcelona would go down in a surprise loss to Roma while Liverpool earned a solid victory over City.
In the final round of Champions League matches for the week on Wednesday, Real Madrid (100 000+ searches) beat Juventus, while Bayern Munich (20 000+ searches) took victory against Sevilla.
Also on Wednesday, Khloe Kardashian saw more than 50 000 searches for her name amidst allegations that her boyfriend Tristan Thompson had cheated on her.

Google processes more than 40 000+ search queries every second. This translates to more than a billion searches per day and 1.2 trillion searches per year worldwide. Google trends data is updated hourly and is available on https://www.google.co.za/trends.
Search trends in South Africa tend to be news and sports-driven. People search for things they hear or see on the news, and sports search terms trend several times a week, on average, every week.
