The top 20 shortlist for the SAMA26 Record of the Year (ROTY) and Music Video of the Year (MVOTY) have been revealed and put up for public vote. All indications are that South Africans got down to generous doses of dance music and hip hop with a sprinkling of amapiano, in the past year.
Leading the pack so far is Prince Kaybee with four nominations the ROTY & MVOTY categories for his smash hits Gugulethu ft Afro Brothers, SUPTA and Indlovukazi as well as for Fetch Your Life featuring Msaki.
Coming in with two nods respectively from the two categories are DJ Zinhle for Umlilo ft Mvzzle and Rethabile; SMA for Nasty C ft Rowlene and Whipped for Tellaman ft Shekhinah and Nasty C.
Also nominated in the ROTY category is the amapiano trio which set alight dance floors with their single turned anthem “Labantwana Ama Uber” Semi Tee ft Kammu Dee & Miano. Internationally acclaimed DJ Black Coffee ft Usher – “Lalala”, Tshego ft King Monada – “No Ties” and Tresor ft Msaki – “Sondela” and Lady Zamar – ‘This Is Love’ are in the running for this category as well. This indeed is a battle of the titans.
MVOTY acknowledged Whipped by Tellaman ft Shekhinah and Nasty C, This is Love by Lady Zamar, Umlilo by Dj Zinhle ft Myzzle and Rethabile, SMA by Nasty C ft Rowlene and Prince Kaybee ft Afro Brothers, SUPTA and Indlovukazi for Gugulethu.
The Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA) announced on last week that the annual South African Music Awards (SAMA) will stage its 26th edition over five nights, 3 to 7 August 2020 at 21.30. In accordance with the nationwide Covid-19 lockdown and social distancing norms, the party has moved from the Sun City Superbowl to be streamed on the My Muze by Vodacom platform and broadcast on Mzansi Magic, DStv channel 161.
