One of the world’s longest running soul vocal groups, The Whispers are celebrating over 50 years in the industry. Known for their smooth, soulful ballads, they remain one of the worlds premier R&B groups with a musical mix of R&B, disco, jazz and pop. They have achieved 33 Top 10 hits over 3 decades and over 20 Billboard charted albums with a string of hits “In The Mood”, “And The Beat Goes On”, “Rock Steady”, “It’s a Love Thing” and “One For The Money”. Their music has been heard on movie sound tracks such as “Waiting to Exhale” and “Madea’s Family Reunion”. They also sang the title track on Jay Leno’s movie soundtrack “Collision Course”.
The Whispers five decades of accomplishments have been acknowledged by an induction into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame and presentation of the Governor’s Award by the San Francisco Chapter of the Grammy Awards.
The Stylistics were formed in Philadelphia, PA in 1966 from two groups, “The Percussions” and “The Monarchs.” When members from each group were drafted or went on to further their education, the remaining members under the guidance of their English teacher, Beverly Hamilton, joined forces and changed their name to “The Stylistics.”
Their first song, “You’re a Big Girl Now,” became a number one hit in Philadelphia and a few other cities. After the success of, “You’re a Big Girl Now,” the band wanted to follow up with an album release. Veteran hit producer, Tom Bell, was contracted and was hired to produce the group’s first album. The album was titled, “The Stylistics,” and from that album came the hits, “Stop, Look, Listen to your Heart,” “You are Everything” and “Betcha By Golly Wow.” The hits continued with the release of their second album, “Round Two” and the Stylistics forever became known as the Philly group with the sweet love songs.
The ultimate soul crooner, Lenny Williams possesses one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary music and has performed in Tower of Power (1972 – 1974) and Graham Central Station. With his rich, passionate vocal style, he is rightfully regarded as one of R&B’s most influential soul men. Williams began his musical career making records that have subsequently become pop and R&B classics. Tunes like the mega-hit, “Cause I Love You” and “So Very Hard To Go,” have transcended into the new millennium, influencing many of today’s newest Pop and R&B vocalists. Lenny has continued his solo career touring the US, Europe and now South Africa. He has recently shared stages with Aretha Franklin, Alicia Keys, K-Jon, Anthony Hamilton, The Whispers, Rick James, Boney James, Bobby Womack, The Ohio Players, Al Green, Usher and Frankie Beverley and Maze.
